Tungsten carbide Application and Synthesis Method

Physical and chemical properties of tungsten carbide is a dark gray crystalline powder. Relative density is 15.6(18/4℃), melting point is 2600℃, boiling point is 6000℃, Mohs hardness is 9. Tungsten carbide is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, but soluble in the mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Tungsten carbide can react violently with fluorine at room temperature and is oxidized to tungsten oxide when heated in air. At 1550~1650℃, tungsten metal powder can be made by direct chemistry with carbon black or at 1150℃, tungsten powder can be made by reaction with carbon monoxide.

Tungsten carbide is used in industrial machinery, cutting tools, abrasives, armor-piercing ammunition and jewelry. It is even more popular than stainless steel because of their incredible hardness and resistance to wear. It is used in the manufacture of mill products, including grinding and milling. It also includes inclined hiking, ski poles and cleats. It is mainly used in the form of carbide.
