Effect of cryogenic treatment on mechanical properties of cemented carbide

The mechanical properties of cemented carbide are mainly reflected in hardness, flexural strength, compressive strength, impact toughness, fatigue strength, etc.https://www.ihrcarbide.com/product-customization/

Whether cryogenic treatment can improve the mechanical properties of cemented carbide is the most intuitive expression of the effectiveness of cryogenic treatment technology. Liu Yajun et al. carried out cryogenic treatment on YW1 carbide blades. The results showed that after cryogenic treatment, the microhardness of this brand of carbide blades increased from 1764HV to 2263.7HV, and the Rockwell hardness increased from 90HRA to 92HRA. Jiang et al. placed YG8 cemented carbide in a low temperature environment of 77K for cryogenic treatment and found that its hardness and compressive strength increased by 4.9% and 10.1% respectively.https://www.ihrcarbide.com/

Chen Zhenhua et al. also obtained similar results after cryogenic treatment of the same grade of cemented carbide. Zhang Pingping placed YG6X fine-grained cemented carbide in a cryogenic box for cryogenic treatment and found that its bending strength and coercive force increased by 7.6% and 10.8% respectively. Chen Hongwei pre-cooled YG15 cemented carbide and then immersed it in liquid nitrogen for cryogenic treatment. The results showed that compared with before cryogenic treatment, the bending strength of YG15 cemented carbide increased by 5.19%. In addition, there are also reports about cryogenic treatment improving mechanical properties such as impact toughness and fatigue strength of cemented carbide. At present, domestic and foreign scholars’ research on the mechanical properties of cemented carbide after cryogenic treatment mainly focuses on two aspects: hardness (including Rockwell hardness and Vickers hardness) and flexural strength. The degree of variation in performance has a large impact. Figures 1 and 2 summarize the changes in hardness and flexural strength of WC-Co cemented carbide with Co content after cryogenic treatment, and their potential change patterns are discussed.
